How we handle waste acetone

Acetone is classed as a flammable liquid and carries the List of Waste code for spent organic solvents. That makes it hazardous waste from the moment it becomes waste, so it needs sealed storage, accurate labelling and a consignment note when it leaves your site.

Store waste acetone in a closed, chemically compatible container away from heat, ignition sources and oxidising agents. Keep it separate from acids and from aqueous waste, because contamination reduces the chance of solvent recovery and increases the treatment cost.

Where the acetone is reasonably clean, we route it for solvent recovery and reuse rather than incineration. Contaminated or mixed acetone is sent for high temperature treatment at a permitted facility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pour acetone down the sink?

No. Acetone is a flammable hazardous waste and discharging it to drain is an offence as well as a fire risk. It must be collected by a licensed carrier.

How should I store waste acetone before collection?

Use a sealed, labelled, chemically compatible container in a cool, ventilated area away from ignition sources, ideally within secondary containment.
